A Better Place to Work
How Barker Ryan Stewart Creates a Supportive Team Culture
It’s no secret that when aligned with personal values, drives, and needs, a company culture can create a shared purpose and help foster an organisation’s ability to thrive.
With this sentiment in mind, at Barker Ryan Stewart we understand that creating a supportive culture is about more than just the set of values and beliefs that guide our organisation. It requires open communication and meaningful input from our team to ensure that every member of our team feels valued, respected, and supported within the workplace.
Our biggest priority is continuing to create a supportive culture with our team’s wellbeing and growth at the forefront. We believe this can be achieved by prioritising flexibility and receptiveness to change, to ensure that openness, diversity, and innovation continue to be key factors in cultivating an enduring team culture.
We know that having a supportive and flexible culture is the foundation that not only produces great work from our team, but helps us to create and maintain strong relationships with our clients by continuing to successfully deliver their projects.
A Better Place to Work
At Barker Ryan Stewart, we believe that prioritising our team’s wellbeing and growth ensures that we can continue to provide a better place to work.
We achieve this by providing a wide range of benefits for our team, including the opportunity to join our Employee Share Ownership Plan, offering flexible working arrangements, offering a Graduate Program and tailored professional development programs – just to name a few.
We recognise the importance of taking time to recharge to look after your wellbeing which is why, subject to our annual performance, we have introduced BRS Days as additional leave above the standard four weeks of annual leave, to allow our team to recharge and take a break, on us.
To ensure we’re continuing to best support our team, we undertake annual independently run Employee Opinion Surveys to gain a deeper understanding of what keeps our team engaged and motivated and provide our team with the formalised opportunity to have their say in making Barker Ryan Stewart a better place to work.
Last year’s survey used a globally recognised system to survey our team based on specific business and personal engagement themes, and our results were benchmarked against data from over 450 Australian companies across a wide range of industries, including our own.
The results from the survey indicate that we are in the top 3% of companies Australia-wide who have completed the survey, and that 88% of our team would not leave our organisation if offered an opportunity elsewhere – a sentiment we’re very proud of.
The key insights gained from the survey demonstrate that from a business perspective, our team greatly values the guidance and support from our leadership team, as well as the benefits we offer – both of which contribute to their overall motivation. Similarly, our communication, culture, and teamwork are key factors in our team’s personal engagement.
“We’re very proud to have ranked in the top 3% of Australian companies who have undertaken the survey and prioritising a culture that empowers our team to work at their best, feel secure, be respected and enjoy their work is the key to the Barker Ryan Stewart’s success.”
Being Social is Integral to our Culture
At Barker Ryan Stewart, we don’t just want to work on great property great and infrastructure projects, we want to make sure we’re prioritising having fun along the way.
Being social is integral to our culture and is embedded in our day-to-day activities. Whether it’s a quick catch up over a coffee, team lunch, celebrating someone’s birthday, or a company-wide social event – our team takes the time daily to check in with one another, catch up socially, and have some fun.
One of our team’s biggest highlights is our annual conference, and last year our team was finally able to get together and safely attend our first in-person conference in three years (we’re looking at you, COVID).
Last year's action-packed conference was held in the heart of Sydney Harbour. We kicked off the conference with a strategic session in the morning and a presentation by Diana Tapp, CEO of World Class Teams, focusing on team culture and how we can continually raise the bar and stay at the top. In the afternoon, we completed a treasure hunt across the city and a sailing regatta on Sydney Harbour, followed by dinner and drinks in the evening.
The conference was a great chance for our team to get together and catch up with some new and familiar faces, particularly after the addition of our Northern Rivers team early last year. We’re already looking forward to catching up and making some new memories at our upcoming conference later this year.
“Although we do have strategic workshops and hear inspirational stories from our guest presenters at our BRS annual conferences, without a doubt the most rewarding aspect of these events is catching up and having a laugh with our teammates from all the offices.”
